The three types of airport shuttle — and what each costs

1. Hotel courtesy shuttles — often free, with conditions

Around 30% of hotels near major airports offer a complimentary shuttle for guests. The ride itself costs nothing extra, but "free" has conditions worth understanding before you rely on one.

Guests only. You must be staying at the hotel. A hotel shuttle will not pick you up from your home or a different address.

Fixed schedule. The shuttle runs on its own timetable, typically every 20 to 30 minutes during peak hours and less often late at night or early morning. If your flight leaves at 5am, confirm the shuttle actually runs at 3:30am before you count on it.

Shared vehicle, no priority. You share with other guests. On a busy morning that can mean waiting for a later run if the vehicle fills before you board.

Limited luggage space. A full hotel shuttle with several guests and their bags runs out of room quickly.

Built into the room rate. Hotel shuttles are rarely truly free. The cost is factored into the room rate or resort fee. It is a convenience, not a saving.

Verdict: good if you are already staying near the airport, your flight time is standard, and you travel light. For early departures, large groups, or pickups from home, it does not apply.

2. Shared shuttles — paid, per person

A shared shuttle groups several passengers heading to the same airport into one vehicle, with pickups along the route. In the United States, shared shuttle fares average around $20 to $40 per person depending on distance.

The trade-off is time. A shared shuttle collects other passengers first, which adds stops and extends your journey. For a solo traveller with a flexible schedule it can represent good value. For a group the maths shifts quickly: three people paying $35 each totals $105, at which point a private shuttle to the same airport may cost less per person with no extra stops.

Shared shuttles are less common in Michiana than in larger metros. Most ground transportation from South Bend, Mishawaka, Granger and Elkhart operates as private hire.

3. Private airport shuttles — flat rate, door to door

A private airport shuttle is booked in advance, collects you from your door, and takes you straight to the terminal. No other stops, no shared vehicle, no fixed timetable. You pay a flat rate agreed at booking.

United Cab South Bend operates as a private airport shuttle. Published flat rates:

  • $20South Bend International (SBN), one passenger — $12 each for groups
  • $20Airport to Notre Dame and nearby hotels — $12 each for groups
  • $30Airport to Mishawaka — plus $10 each additional
  • $75Airport to Elkhart — plus $10 each additional
  • $100Airport to Plymouth — plus $10 each additional
  • $350Chicago O'Hare or Midway — plus $25 each additional

These are published rates. They do not change for early morning pickups, Notre Dame home weekends, or bad weather. United Cab does not use surge pricing. Full details on the taxi rates page.

What affects how much you pay

Distance

The biggest factor. A ten-minute ride to South Bend Airport costs far less than a two-hour run to O'Hare. Flat rates reflect the full distance, with no meter and no route variations.

Number of passengers

Group rates change the calculation. Four people travelling together to South Bend Airport pay $12 each, a total of $48, against $20 for a solo traveller. The more passengers, the better the per-person value.

Time of day

United Cab charges no extra for early morning or late night pickups. The published rate applies at all hours. App-based services can surge at exactly those times.

Advance booking

A pre-booked flat rate locks in the price. An on-demand rideshare prices at the moment of request, which moves with local demand.

Wait time

If you need the driver to wait, for example a quick errand before the airport, that is billed at $35 per hour. Agree it at booking rather than on the day.

Luggage and vehicle size

Shuttle vans take standard luggage for groups at no extra charge. Mention golf clubs, a wheelchair, sports equipment or large boxes at booking so the right vehicle is sent.

Is it worth paying for an airport shuttle?

For most airport trips from the Michiana area, yes. Here is the honest version of why, including where it is not.

For Chicago airports the answer is straightforward. O'Hare and Midway are around 95 miles from South Bend. That is roughly two hours each way, tolls on the Skyway and Toll Road, several days of parking at a major Chicago airport, and a shuttle from the lot to the terminal. After a long return flight, driving two more hours is the part people regret.

For longer trips to South Bend Airport a shuttle usually wins too. A week or more of long-term parking adds up, and you return to a car that has sat outdoors through whatever the weather did. A pre-booked return means a driver is already tracking your inbound flight.

For short trips to South Bend Airport, driving yourself can be cheaper. Two or three nights in the economy lot may cost less than two cab fares. We would rather you made the right call than booked something that leaves you feeling overcharged.

For groups the per-person cost drops. A family of four to South Bend Airport pays $12 each, and nobody drives, parks, or drags bags further than the kerb.

For early morning and late night travel a booked shuttle is dependable in a way on-demand is not. App availability in Michiana at 4am is not guaranteed. A confirmed booking is a commitment.

What about shuttles advertised as free?

Three situations where an airport shuttle may cost you nothing directly:

Hotel courtesy shuttles. Free for guests, subject to the schedule and availability conditions above.

A lift from a friend or family member. Genuinely free, if the offer is firm. The risk is a late cancellation on travel day.

Employer or corporate account. Some companies cover ground transportation for business travel. If yours does, set up an account with a local provider so billing is handled directly.

Outside these, a professional airport shuttle is a paid service. Any site advertising "free airport shuttle" without conditions is describing a hotel amenity, not a standalone transport service.

What you get when you pay for a private shuttle

A confirmed booking. Not a driver accepting a request, but a confirmed departure with a specific driver sent to your address at a specific time.

Door-to-door service. Pickup at your front door, drop-off at the terminal entrance. No lot shuttle, no long walk, no parking structure.

Flight monitoring on returns. Give the flight number and the driver tracks your inbound. If it is delayed, the pickup adjusts without you calling.

A fixed price. Agreed before travel day. No meter, no surge, no estimate that changes between booking and arrival.

Local knowledge. A driver who knows the area, the traffic around Notre Dame home weekends, and which terminal your airline uses at O'Hare.

Round-the-clock availability. A 4am pickup for a 6am departure is a standard booking, not a special request.

A note for Notre Dame students and families

Notre Dame students pay $5 per person for local rides on campus. Airport runs to South Bend International are the standard flat rate, $20 for one passenger or $12 each for groups. During Thanksgiving, winter break and end of semester, demand from the Notre Dame area is high, so booking ahead rather than the night before is strongly recommended.

Families visiting for move-in, graduation or a home game weekend can book from their hotel directly to Notre Dame Stadium or campus buildings. See the game day taxi page for details.
