Southwest Michigan wine trail
Berrien County's wineries and breweries are a short run north across the state line. We drive, so nobody has to draw the short straw and stay sober.
Lake Michigan beaches
St. Joseph, Benton Harbor and New Buffalo have proper beach towns with harbours, piers and places to eat. A good summer Saturday out.
Amish country
Shipshewana's flea market and the farm shops around Middlebury and Nappanee. Slow roads and horse-drawn traffic, which is easier from the back seat.
Casinos
Four Winds in New Buffalo is the closest. A round trip with a set pickup time means no one drives home tired.
Indiana Dunes
Indiana's only national park, on the lakeshore about an hour west. Beaches, dunes and over 50 miles of trails.
Chicago
Two hours by road. Most people fly out of O'Hare or Midway with us — see the airport shuttle page — but we do run into the city itself.
How a long trip works
Flat rate, quoted first. Anything beyond the local area is priced as a whole trip rather than metered. You get the number before you commit.
Round trip with a wait is usually the answer. Rideshare coverage thins out fast once you leave the metro area, and there's no public transport back from most of these places. Wait time is $35 per hour.
Book ahead. A day's notice for a long run, more in summer and on football weekends.
Vans for groups. A wine tour or a family day out travels together, with room for coolers and bags.
Crossing into Michigan is routine. New Buffalo, St. Joseph, Niles — no extra arrangement needed.
